Jacques' Presentation

Jordan's Report on Spider's webs.

Funnel webs.

Some spiders live in burrow webs. The burrow is made of silk and is underground. Above the ground, the spider spins a funnel with long threads going into the burrow. Sometimes an insect gets caught in the web, the spider can feel it vibrating and eats it.

Lasso webs.

The Lasso web is also a type of spiders web which catches moths. This is how the spider makes the Lasso web: It makes a long thread with balls of glue at the bottom. This type of spider has hairs on its body so it can feel the moths moving. To catch the moth it spins the thread with glue at the bottom and the glue touches the moth so the moth gets caught and the spider pulls it in.

Olympic Heroes.

Dylan's Report on Spider's Webs.

Silk is what spiders make their webs with. Spider's silk is runny. The silk is squeezed through tubes from the spiders bottom half, at the end of the spider. After the silk is runny, it goes hard like steel. Silk is very thin. It takes a spider one minute to make one meter of silk. One million webs is what one tea spoon of silk can make. It takes a spider almost thirty meters of silk to make one web. Spiders eat their old web before making a new one.
When spiders are on their web they can't get stuck. Spiders webs are made with sticky and dry threads. The spider walks on the dry threads, so it does not step on the sticky threads. Only the spider knows where the dry threads are.

Greedy Cat

The ESOL reading group from Room 8 have been using a well known and much loved story about Greedy Cat. After reading the book, the children have re-written and drawn the story using Kid Pix.

Tenpin Bowling.

On Sunday, my uncle drove my marvellous mum and I to the tenpin bowling at Wairau Park. When it was my turn I felt anxious because I had never played it before. I swung the heavy ball tight and launched it onto the slippery surface. It was uncontrolled and I missed. I felt depressed because I didn't knock any pins down. Then I thought ' this time i know I can smash pins down'. I stopped in silence like a praying mantis waiting for its prey. I then changed my mind and sat down to watch my mum before I attempted it again.

The Vicious, Gruesome Gladiators and the Circle of Death

Room 8 wrote this piece of writing together. It was based around a picture of two gladiators fighting. The learning intention was to use new descriptive words and similes. After the shared writing experience, children then created their own individual, descriptive writing.

I was nervous, I was about to fight. I was a gladiator. It was scary when I first looked at my opponent, he looked vicious with his weapons and his armour. The warrior looked like a crocodile or grizzly bear ready to pounce on its prey.
My heart was pounding like a beating drum,my hands were shaking with fear. I was in combat, fighting for my life. I had a three pointed spear and a large fishing net as my weapons.
We were fighting in the Collosseum, the colourful, noisy crowd were going wild. They were like frenzied baboons waiting for blood to spill.
As I began to move the sharp sword was stabbed into my leg from the other gladiator. I started to collapse on the hard, sandy ground. The pain in my leg was very nasty. Dust blew over my body as I lay there bleeding. I was risking my life, I was not going to give up.
The other gladiator came in for the kill. I lay with my spear in my right hand. Blood oozed out of my leg, I had to act quickly.
As he approached I grabbed the net and swung it at his feet. He tripped and lost his balance. The smirky grin on his face disappeared. With a very fast motion I pushed the weapon deep into his side, like a nail into wood.
He fell and died. I came to my feet slowly with the sound of the crowd cheering.

Science Experiments in term 1

In term one the middle syndicate investigated the digestive system. Room 8 children are seen here pushing chyme (stomach contents when pulped) through the small intestine. A stocking cut at both ends simulated the intestine. The children squeezed the contents through, creating the movement of digested food through the small intestine.

Tryathlon

Class members relaxing and discussing their tryathlon experiences. Many Room 8 children entered the tryathlon as solo competitors.
It was a tough circuit, moving from one activity to the next, proving to be a challenge for many.

March Tryathlon.
